Nina Merchant-Vega left the Foundation in July 2013. She formerly served as the associate director for The Asia Foundation's economic reform and development programs. In this role she concentrated on program development and technical assistance, particularly in the areas of field research and evaluation design. Prior to her work at The Asia Foundation she served as a development economist for The Louis Berger Group where she designed several large-scale household infrastructure surveys in Southern Sudan as part of an extensive infrastructure monitoring and evaluation project. She also served as a researcher for the Center for Development Finance at the Institute for Financial Management and Research in India where she designed and fielded energy-industry semi-structured interviews in support of alternative energy projects.
She also has substantial experience in democracy and governance programming. She served as an assistant program officer at IRI, where she was the primary Washington manager for the Malaysia and Bangladesh programs, and the secondary manager for the Indonesia and Cambodia programs. She also has served as a short-term election observer in the Balkans for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Education: B.A in Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley; Master of Pacific and International Affairs (MPIA) with concentrations in Quantitative Public Policy and Southeast Asia from the University of California, San Diego.
