James D. “J. D.” Zellerbach, founding treasurer of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees (1954-1956), was a prominent industrialist and former United States Ambassador to Italy. He was chairman of the board of the Crown Zellerbach Corporation, one of the nation’s largest paper companies. A native of San Francisco, Mr. Zellerbach was a former president of the city’s Jewish Welfare Fund; national vice-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews; vice-president of the National Jewish Hospital in Denver; and a director of Mount Zion Hospital.
