Expertise: Human rights and civil liberties, security reform and conflict management.

Leopold (Leo) Sudaryono joined The Asia Foundation in February 2006. His portfolio at the Foundation has encompassed the Foundation’s programs on police reform, including community-oriented policing, prison reform, legislative strengthening, and the Human Rights Court.

Before joining the Foundation, Mr. Sudaryono was a senior program officer for Oxfam GB in Indonesia. He also worked for three of the leading democracy and human rights organizations in Indonesia after the Soeharto period. His involvement in the student movement in mid-1990s led him to begin his career as young lawyer at LBH Jakarta in early 1998. While still a student, representing the Catholic Student Movement (PMKRI) he became a Presidium and later the head of the Monitoring Division of KIPP, the first independent election monitor in Indonesia, which was established in 1997. Mr. Sudaryono also joined the legal staff at KONTRAS, where he worked closely with the late human rights activist Munir and others in advocating the return of kidnapped pro-democracy activists.

Education: Bachelor in Law (SH) from Diponogoro University in Semarang, Indonesia in 1998. Master’s Degree in Human Rights and Civil Liberties (LLM) from the University of Leicester, UK in 2002. Transitional Justice Diploma from the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 2005.
