Helen Crocker Russell, founding member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees (1954-1966), was a civic leader and philanthropist in San Francisco. She was a descendant of one of California's founding families, the Crockers, known for their prominent cultural and educational development including their influential role in the building of the Central Pacific Railroad. Mrs. Russell generously supported and actively served on the boards of many organizations, both locally and nationally. She was vice chairman of the United Nations Conference Committee of San Francisco in 1945, as well as an adviser to the American Delegation to the UNESCO conferences in Paris and Florence in 1946 and 1950.
