Mongolia in Focus: The Dzud of 2010

The Mongolian winter of 2009-2010 was one of the coldest the country has experienced in over three decades. In what Mongolians refer to as a "dzud" - their term for an unusually harsh winter preceded by a dry summer - more than three million livestock animals perished, threatening the livelihood of herders throughout the country. This Field in Focus contrasts the unforgiving winter landscapes of that country with the enduring warmth of Mongolian family and community life.
