Mongolia in Focus: The Dzud of 2010
The Mongolian winter of 2009-2010 was one of the coldest the country has experienced in over three decades. In what Mongolians refer to as a "dzud" - their term for an unusually harsh winter preceded by a dry summer - more than three million livestock animals perished, threatening the livelihood of herders throughout the country.
