Since 2001, when the fellowship was initiated, The Asia Foundation, in collaboration with India's Ministry of External Affairs, has awarded fellowships to six diplomats with diverse research interests. The Ministry identifies candidates for the fellowship; the Foundation arranges an appropriate affiliation in keeping with the individual's professional and research interests. Diplomats who have completed their fellowships include:

- Mr. Ajay Gondane - Sociological Causes of Terrorism
- Mr. Anupam Ray - Counterterrorism in South Asia
- Mr. Amandeep Singh Gill - Arms Policy and Disarmament
- Amb. Gautam Mukhopadhaya – U.S.-Afghanistan-Pakistan Policy
