The Asia Foundation's International Relations programs inform American and Asian policymakers on the need for a greater and more nuanced understanding of the dynamics and complexities of their respective foreign policies. Through its unique perspective on foreign policy in the region, the Foundation works to broaden discussion on foreign policy issues by including important voices from various segments from civil society. Foundation-led bilateral, trilateral, and multilateral dialogues help to identify points of mutual understanding while acknowledging divergent points of view that allow government officials and private sector leaders on both sides of the Pacific to craft policies which have the greatest chance of success, both domestically and internationally.
For more than three decades, The Asia Foundation has been able to help broaden exchange and dialogue between emerging policy leaders in the United States and Asia from a broad range of professional backgrounds on issues of regional and international concern, addressing the changing dynamics of politics, economics, and security. Participants in our programs have gone on to acquire leadership positions in their nations, making decisions of national and international significance.
The Asia Foundation also supports the development of diplomats from China, Indonesia, Thailand, East Timor, Laos, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and elsewhere through diplomatic training and targeted exchange programs. The U.S. Department of State has commended and supported the Foundation for its work in this area, believing this training has paid dividends by enabling Asian diplomats to deal with their counterparts in the U.S. in a nuanced and informed manner.
