This report presents the findings of the first national survey of the information needs of voters in Indonesia. This survey was initiated in response to requests from Indonesian NGOs involved in voter education programs with the goal of providing the information Indonesian organizations would need to plan effective registration, voter, and civic education campaigns prior to the June national election. A brief paper that examines the development of the Polícia Nacional de Timor-Leste (PNTL) over the last decade, which has been a core focus of the international community as well as successive national governments. As capacity has been developed at both the individual and organizational levels, the need for the PNTL to develop into a community oriented police service has been stated regularly. Despite this prominence in international and national rhetoric on police development, demonstrable progress toward making community policing a cornerstone of policing in Timor-Leste has been very limited. The political leadership of Timor-Leste is very focused on the issues around the police and the need for police reform. As a vague ambition rather than an immediate priority, community policing is chronically under-resourced, with the most recent FY12 budget leaving out its funds for training completely.

The fifth annual study of “Investment Competitiveness of Regencies/Cities in Indonesia” implemented by KPPOD (Regional Autonomy Watch). Building on 35 years of collaboration with Muslim organizations in Indonesia, The Asia Foundation currently supports Islamic civil society organizations in their efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, improve local governance, and reduce poverty in Indonesia. These organizations have long formed the vital core of Indonesia's civil society and continue to play a leading role in democratic reform and improving social conditions. They include groups belonging to the mass-based organizations Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah which together claim over 60 million members, with networks that span the country from the national down to the district and village levels. Commanding legitimacy and influence in both state and society in Indonesia, Islamic organizations are a natural partner in Indonesia's development.

Dalam sejarah Indonesia hingga saat ini, organisasi-organisasi Islam ini merupakan bagian penting dari masyarakat sipil di Indonesia yang mendukung pembaruan demokrasi dan memperbaiki kondisi sosial- ekonomi di Indonesia. Sebagian besar mitra Asia Foundation yang berada di tingkat nasional hingga lokal adalah lembaga-lembaga di bawah payung kultur Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) dan Muhammadiyah.

Justice and State-Building in Afghanistan: State vs. Society vs. Taliban is one of a series of analytical papers on The Asia Foundation’s recently released public-opinion survey, Afghanistan in 2011: A Survey of the Afghan People. The series of essays provide detailed analysis of the survey data on the opinions and perceptions of Afghans toward government, public policy, democracy, and political and social change as interpreted by specialists who have in-depth knowledge of the region. The contributors comment on trends, patterns, and variations owing to Afghan geography, ethnicity, and other factors, and offer policy advice with a long-term view on the future of Afghanistan.
