The report, supported by The Asia Foundation, provides economic analysis that addresses the needs of business people, potential investors, development practitioners, management professionals, academics and students both in Nepal and abroad. It covers international economy, real estate, manufacturing, tourism, education, foreign aid, and more over the second and third quarters of fiscal 2010/2011.

This is the third study in a series on impunity in Nepal supported by The Asia Foundation after two previous attempts in 1999 and 2005. The report examines incidents of violence during Nepal's decade-long conflict that have become 'emblems' of the country's poor human rights record. It also reports on some of the post-conflict excesses and what little has been done to establish guilt and punish the culprits.

This paper explores the use of participatory action research as a method to deepen the practice of mediation at the village level in rural Nepal. Mediation, initially introduced with a strong Western orientation, has evolved through practice and the response to daily conflict during and after the civil war. At its inception, the program was framed as an "access to justice" initiative. Conducted with district and village-level mediators and trainers, the research yielded important insights into how and why mediation practices were effective, and led to significant changes in training materials and approach.

While much of Asia is developing rapidly, several countries and subnational regions remain caught in protracted cycles of conflict and fragility, leading to under-development, poor governance and instability. State-society relations in these environments are often troubled, and have frequently become the primary cause of prolonged conflict and fragility. Many citizens in conflict-affected and fragile regions have come to see their government as distant, unresponsive, inaccessible, or absent altogether. When citizens perceive states as illegitimate, many will simply avoid contact with their governments, and in some cases support violent challenges to state authority.

While much of Asia is developing rapidly, some countries and subnational regions remain caught in protracted cycles of conflict and fragility, leading to under-development, poor governance and instability. The Government of Nepal is strongly committed to promoting gender equality, ending gender-based violence (GBV), and advancing programs that enhance women's empowerment. In line with this commitment, the Gender Empowerment Coordination Unit (GECU) at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (OPMCM) oversees and coordinates the Government of Nepal's efforts to address gender-related challenges. The National Strategy and Plan of Action on Gender Empowerment and Ending GBV 2012-2017 is one of the key policy instruments currently being used the the government. This study report examines the current situation, changes, trends, and achievements in the areas of violence against women as a sub-category of GBV in six districts representing the easter, central, western, and far western development regions of Nepal.
