The Regional Autonomy Watch (KPPOD) was established in 2000 by stakeholders from the business community, journalists and researchers to monitor the impact of regional autonomy on economic growth. With support from The Asia Foundation, Regional Autonomy Watch ranked regional competitiveness between 2001 and 2005, using perception surveys of business owners coupled with secondary data about key indicators of factors that support the regional business climate and promote healthy competition.

MENDUKUNG PRAKARSA REFORMASI EKONOMI DI INDONESIA

Prakarsa Reformasi Ekonomi ini dilaksanakan Asia Foundation memanfaatkan jaringannya yang luas dengan lembaga-lembaga pemerintah dan mitra organisasi lokal yang bergerak di bidang studi, advokasi, dan kebijakan. Kegiatan-kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam prakarsa ini bermuara kepada tiga kelompok tujuan: menciptakan insentif bagi kebijakan ekonomi yang lebih baik; menyediakan alat untuk pelaksanaan kebijakan ekonomi yang lebih baik; dan, menjamin keterlibatan kelompok miskin. This report is a preliminary assessment of 30 in-depth interviews and 3 focus groups on elections and democracy in Indonesia. The interviews are the first phase of a two-phase research project to help Indonesian organizations plan voter and civic education efforts before next year’s election, with a national survey to follow. Because these are qualitative, not quantitative, findings, our results cannot be projected numerically to the population at large, but we believe the findings illuminate some important aspects of Indonesian public opinion. Our aim here is to lay out initial findings suggested by the work and issues highlighted for investigation in the coming survey. Craig Charney of Charney Research (New York) and Achala Srivatsa of AC Nielsen (Indonesia) wrote this report, with some editorial assistance from The Asia Foundation staff.

Indonesian version of Local Economic Governance Index, 2007.
This year's Local Economic Governance Survey provides a fascinating look into the dynamics of local governance and business development in Indonesia nearly a decade after regional autonomy. More than ever, citizens and businesses are pressing to know how well local governments are using their authority to provide better public services and improve their business climates. This is the sixth survey of a research program begun in 2001 by KPPOD, with support from the Asia Foundation. Each year the scope has expanded, beginning with 90 districts (2001), then 134 districts (2002), 200 districts (2003), 214 districts (2004), 228 districts (2005) and finally 243 districts this year.
