The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program has operated in Vietnam since 1993 through a partnership with the National Library in Hanoi. Over the past five years, the Foundation has provided approximately 160,000 volumes to Vietnam to more than 100 institutions throughout the country, with an additional 120,000 expected to be shipped over the next three years, with a total value of $4.5 million.

On March 10, 2006, The Asia Foundation signed an important agreement with the Children’s Book Palace that will provide space and help to distribute as many as 100,000 books nationwide over the next three years. The event was attended by Minister of Education, Culture and Sciences Enkhtuvshin, Deputy Secretary of MPRP, Idevkhten, U.S. Ambassador Pamela J.Slutz, and Todd Smith, Head of the Canada Fund. The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program received generous support from both the U.S. Embassy and from the Canada Fund, which put books in the hands of tens of thousands of students, scholars, and citizens nationwide.

On March 31, 2006, The Asia Foundation donated 1200 English language text books, on various subjects, for adults and children, to 30 rural (soum level) public libraries throughout Mongolia. This moving event gave librarians, some from remote rural areas, the opportunity to directly receive the donation on their communities’ behalf. “I want to thank The Asia Foundation for donating these books, which will be useful to a variety of people in our community and will enrich their knowledge of English and the U.S.” said Dulamsuren from Sukhbaatar Province in Mongolia. “I have been a librarian for 33 years and these are the first English-language books that our library has received, thank you!”

On March 31, 2006, The Asia Foundation donated 1200 English language text books, on various subjects, for adults and children, to 30 rural (soum level) public libraries throughout Mongolia. The Books for Asia program in Cambodia operated from 1955 to 1966, and resumed distribution in Cambodia in 1993. Since then, Books for Asia has annually distributed approximately 50,000 books to various Cambodian universities, schools, non-government organizations (NGOs), ministries, and government institutions open to the public. Since its inception in Cambodia, the Books for Asia program has distributed more than 600,000 books and journals. In the mid and late 1980s, the Books for Asia program provided books for Cambodian refugees in Site II (Aranyaprathet) and other camps on the Cambodian-Thai border. These book donations were especially important to the educational institutions established in the camps to serve the education needs of Cambodian refugees. In a country where communities were devastated during the Khmer Rouge period and most educational resources were destroyed, books donated by The Asia Foundation have served as a valued resource for readers and their research.

Through his Subornogram Foundation, Shahed started several schools to serve these disadvantaged groups – providing river children with basic math and literacy skills, as well as basic English classes. Books for Asia has already donated several hundred books and educational materials to the Subornogram Schools.

The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program provides quality English-language educational and reference materials on a wide variety of subjects to schools, libraries, and non-profit research centers throughout Mongolia.  Khishig-Undur School is located in Bulgan Aimag (Province), Khishig-Undur Soum (Village) 318 kilometers northwest of Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. Khishig-Undur School has received books from Books for Asia in 1997, 1999 and in 2007. Since 1998, the school has received the top awards for its students studying English language for Bulgan Aimag.

Since it reopened its office in Afghanistan in 2002, The Asia Foundation has established strong links with the formal education system, and also supports civil society organizations to provide remedial, vocational, and other non-formal education and training for women and girls. The Foundation works both to increase girls' access to education as well as to improve the quality of education offered. During the years of conflict, the Foundation supported education for Afghan girls and women living in refugee camps in Pakistan. During the Taliban years, when girls were banned from school, the Foundation supported PARSA, a local Kabul-based organization that ran home schools for girls.
