It traveled across South and South-Western parts of Mongolia in an effort to promote education and learning nationwide. Khan Bank and the Asia foundation representatives delivered 11,000 books to 9 soums in Uvs, Arkhangai, Uvurkhangai and Zavkhan aimags.

On March 10, 2006, The Asia Foundation signed an important agreement with the Children’s Book Palace that will provide space and help to distribute as many as 100,000 books nationwide over the next three years. The event was attended by Minister of Education, Culture and Sciences Enkhtuvshin, Deputy Secretary of MPRP, Idevkhten, U.S. Ambassador Pamela J.Slutz, and Todd Smith, Head of the Canada Fund. The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program received generous support from both the U.S. Embassy and from the Canada Fund, which put books in the hands of tens of thousands of students, scholars, and citizens nationwide.

On March 31, 2006, The Asia Foundation donated 1200 English language text books, on various subjects, for adults and children, to 30 rural (soum level) public libraries throughout Mongolia. This moving event gave librarians, some from remote rural areas, the opportunity to directly receive the donation on their communities’ behalf. “I want to thank The Asia Foundation for donating these books, which will be useful to a variety of people in our community and will enrich their knowledge of English and the U.S.” said Dulamsuren from Sukhbaatar Province in Mongolia. “I have been a librarian for 33 years and these are the first English-language books that our library has received, thank you!”

Books for Asia is a program of The Asia Foundation that regularly distributes books and other reading materials for all educational levels in over 15 countries. Since it was first started in September 1954, Books for Asia has distributed more than 41 million books and journals to more than 50,000 academic and non-academic institutions throughout Asia. In the Philippines alone, the Books for Asia Program has distributed over 13 million books and journals to public and private institutions across the country, as a contribution to national development, international understanding, and English-language literacy.

Over the past five years, the Foundation has provided approximately 160,000 volumes to Vietnam to more than 100 institutions throughout the country, with an additional 120,000 expected to be shipped over the next three years, with a total value of $4.5 million.
